Most Activewear Is Just Plastic. Hemp Isn’t.

Here’s something nobody mentions at the gym: most activewear is just plastic in a nicer outfit. Polyester, nylon, the usual. It works, until it smells, pills at the seams and sheds microplastics in the wash.

Hemp is the other option. A Hamppy is underwear first, but it doubles as activewear with a much smaller footprint than the usual synthetic kit. The fibre comes from the hemp plant. It’s strong and low-impact. It also breathes and manages moisture in a way that suits almost any kind of training. No moisture-wicking technology engineered by a team of scientists in a wind tunnel. It’s a plant. Plants have been breathing for a while.

A few reasons it holds up when you move:

  • The natural fibres are breathable and wick sweat, so you stay cool and dry mid-session.
  • Hemp is naturally antimicrobial, which keeps odour down even on the harder days.
  • The fabric is long-lasting and keeps its shape, so it survives regular training and regular washing.
  • As a crop, hemp is rain-fed, grows fast and needs no pesticides, so the activewear costs the planet less to make.

The activewear problem nobody wants to name

The activewear industry is one of the worst offenders in fast fashion. Cheap, often poorly made kit, sold by the armful, worn for a few months, then gone. It’s a strange thing to celebrate, replacing your gym clothes as often as your protein tub.

This is the part where most brands would show you someone doing a backflip in a sunset and call it empowerment. We’d rather just make one good pair that sticks around. Which is most of the point of hemp.

Hemp activewear earns its reputation on two things: how it feels and how long it lasts.

On comfort, the natural fibres keep air moving, so you stay cool and dry while you train. The fabric feels soft against the skin, not the scratchy thing people wrongly expect from hemp. And unlike synthetics, hemp’s natural antimicrobial properties keep workout odour in check without any chemical finish doing the work.

On reliability, the fibres resist wear, which makes them ideal for clothing that has to survive being used and washed on repeat. Research backs this up: hemp fabric actually softens with every wash while keeping its strength and shape. It’s also naturally resistant to mould, UV and general wear, all of which add years to your Hamppy.

And as you probably know from our other blogs, hemp carries a far lighter environmental load than most activewear materials. Your leggings are a marvel of modern polymer science. A second skin. A feat of engineering. Also, when you’re done with them, a problem your great-grandchildren inherit. Hemp is fast-growing, low-water, pesticide-free and biodegradable at the end of its long life. Choosing it for your workout is a quiet way to shrink your overall footprint.

Lydia uit Berlijn draagt maat M in haar eigen stijl: “I love wearing a Hamppy for my workout. It’s supremely comfortable, handles sweat and honestly it gives me confidence while I train. I’ll wear it a little higher on the waist over comfy leggings too. If you can see it, good. It looks great, so no reason to hide it.”

Minimalist and stylish at the gym

A Hamppy works with pretty much any style, so you look good whether you’re in the gym or the park. We do have a few ideas though. The easiest route is a minimalist one that lets the natural texture and colour of the fabric do the talking. A few suggestions to lift the outfit:

  • Lean into neutral, earthy tones that play up hemp’s organic look.
  • Or ignore all of that and go bright. Colour is very much allowed.
  • Pair it with plain sneakers or lifting shoes for relaxed but put-together.
  • Throw a loose hemp tee over your leggings or shorts for an easy casual look.
  • Mix textures and fabrics if you want the outfit to stand out.
  • Bring your headphones for your favourite playlist. Or ours.

That last one is real: we made a Hamppy Workout playlist on Spotify if you’d rather borrow our taste than build your own.

In the end, styling a Hamppy workout outfit comes down to one thing. Lean into the natural charm of hemp, keep comfort and confidence up front. The rest sorts itself out.
