The sustainable packaging polybag question is the one we get asked about most. Here is the honest answer.
Let’s get the uncomfortable bit out of the way. Almost everything you own arrived wrapped in plastic. That crisp shirt folded so beautifully on the shop shelf? It rolled into town in a little plastic bag, just like the rest of us.
Hamppy is no exception. Every pair we send out ships in a polybag. We spend a frankly unreasonable amount of time chasing cleaner, smarter ways to make things, the sort of hours that worry our families. And still, like everyone in fashion, we keep faceplanting into the gap between what we want and what actually works. The polybag is sitting right in the middle of that gap, looking smug.
So rather than hide it behind a leaf logo and the word “conscious,” we’re going to explain it.
The sustainable packaging polybag problem
A polybag is the clear plastic sleeve that protects clothing in transit. Humble little thing. Does more heavy lifting than its appearance suggests, like a stagehand. Usually made from polyethylene or polypropylene, it earns its keep in three ways.
It protects the product. The second your Hamppy underwear leaves the workshop, it sets off on a long trip, often across continents, with no supervision. The polybag keeps out dirt, damp and the general chaos of global shipping. Without it, whole batches can show up ruined, which is a far sadder waste than one thin bag.
It keeps transport lean. Polybags weigh almost nothing and take up barely any room, which keeps both shipping costs and the carbon footprint down. They also refuse to tear, so your underwear arrives in the same condition it left, rather than looking like it lost a fight.
It keeps the supply chain honest. Because the bag is see-through, products are easy to identify and labels are easy to read. Fewer mix-ups. Fewer “why did I receive a single sock” emails. Everybody wins.
None of which makes plastic innocent. It just means the bag is actually working for a living.
No greenwashing: yes, we use them, like literally everyone
Got a better idea? We're genuinely begging.
We’re not happy with the status quo. We’re not going to put a soft filter on it and pretend it’s fine. Hamppy is actively researching and testing packaging that fits our values and still protects the product to the standard we promise. Have we found the perfect replacement? No. When we do, you will absolutely hear about it, possibly louder than necessary. Until then, you get the truth, which is that we’re still working on it.
You care about the impact of what you buy. So do we, embarrassingly so. We think a brand can be part of the solution even while it’s elbow-deep in the hard, unglamorous parts, plastic packaging firmly included. Fashion gets to be honest and better made at the same time. We fully intend to help drag it there, polybag in hand.
So if you know a packaging fix we’ve missed, tell us. We mean it. We will test the thing.
